While reviewing some fishing trip photos today, I came across this one particular photo that I always kept saying I wanted to put on my website. As it had several key elements that I love in a photo, water, nautical image, ships, rough seas, overcast skies and something different. While out on a Charter Boat in late December 2016 with several of my friends I organized a Black Fish trip. I remember checking the conditions with the captain the night before as it was calling for 5 to 6 foot waves, 35 mph winds and tempertures between 25 to 30 degrees. I asked the captain since we would be 9 miles off shore if the trip for me and 4 of my friends was still on due to the weather conditions they were calling for. His response was classic, "Sure why not". Well needless to say we were at the dock at 5:30 am and took off and much to my surprise the winds were there but not as strong. The fishing was remarkable as we pulled in one Black Fish after another catching a total of 90+ for the day. As we began to head in while still in international waters I saw this massive size Cargo Ship heading right at us. The Charter Boat captain quickly got out of the lane of this massive sized Cargo Ship, but I ran into the cabin and grabbed my camera as just the site of this Cargo Ship was so impressive. It was easily 5 to 6 stories tall with truck lenght containers running from the bow to the stern. The Captain's Tower seen in all white was right in the middle of the ship and you could easily see why as it was easier to see over the front and back of his cargo by having his tower in this location. This Cargo Ship was heading further out east going more towards the north east seas where some of the most horrific waves and storms are seen. Besides all the great sunrise and fishing photos I was able to capture that day I was glad I was able to run across this remarkable about 8 to 9 miles off shore.
For more information on these Cargo Ships please feel free to read below;
A cargo ship or freighter ship is any sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's seas and oceans each year, handling the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built by welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped. The earliest records of waterborne activity mention the carriage of items for trade; the evidence of history and archaeology shows the practice to be widespread by the beginning of the 1st millennium BC, and as early as the 14th and 15th centuries BC small Mediterranean cargo ships like those of the 50 foot long (15–16 metre) Uluburun ship were carrying 20 tons of exotic cargo; 11 tons of raw copper, jars, glass, ivory, gold, spices, and treasures from Canaan, Greece, Egypt, and Africa. The desire to operate trade routes over longer distances, and throughout more seasons of the year, motivated improvements in ship design during the Middle Ages.
Before the middle of the 19th century, the incidence of piracy resulted in most cargo ships being armed, sometimes quite heavily, as in the case of the Manila galleons and East Indiamen. They were also sometimes escorted by warships.
Piracy is still quite common in some waters, particularly in the Malacca Straits, a narrow channel between Indonesia and Singapore / Malaysia, and cargo ships are still commonly targeted. In 2004, the governments of those three nations agreed to provide better protection for the ships passing through the Straits. The waters off Somalia and Nigeria are also prone to piracy, while smaller vessels are also in danger along parts of the South American, Southeast Asian coasts and near the Caribbean Sea.
