Every year in Freeport, New York located on the south shore of Long Island a shark tournament is held to help raise money for the Harry Chapin Foundation. Harry Chapin was a musician from Long Island most famous for his song, Cats In The Cradle. He began this foundation to help neaty children to supply they with food and also supplies and shelter. Unfortunatly Harry Chapin was killed many years ago while driving home on the Long Island Expressway from New York City. But this Hudson Anglers, which is a fishing club I belong to located in Oceanside sponsors the largest shark tournament on the east coast of the United States, it attacts over 200 shark fisherman who leave the starting point at 6:00am and must pass under the bridge into Freeport pass the judges boat by 6:30pm even if you have the largest shark and do not get in on time you will not win, (and that has happened in the past). There is one cash winner to first place and for runner up winners who receive various gifts from fishing poles to coupons for a night out a nice restaurant. During the tournament as the sharks are being brought in and weighed the five heaviest on put up and hung on the Shark Gallows. In this photograph I photographed from left to right a blue shark, threasher, threasher, blue and threasher shark. The threasher in the middle won the contest with the shark weighing in at 398 pounds. All of the shark meet is frozen and sold to the restaurants and some of the proceeds from vendors who sold some of the merchandise is also given to the Harry Chapin Foundation.
