As I boarded a charter fishing boat with some friends out of Manhasset Bay, New York located on the north shore of Long Island to head out to the Long Island Sound for some striper and blue fishing we started to hear over the radio that there was some strange powerful winds heading along the north shore and that there was a small craft advisory for the north shore and most of Long Island. We had already began to leave Manhasset Bay when we heard this report and were traveling at 5 mph in a no wake zone. The captain pulled back on the throttle and put the boat in neutral and called out to some local charters that had left about a half hour earlier then us to see what the conditions where like in the open water. Two captains reported back that they were heading in behind some jetties and out of the open area of the Long Island Sound as the winds were picking up and making it impossible to keep the anchor down as the boats were getting pulled back and forth. Our captain recommended we sit in Manhasset Bay and ride out the storm and if it became to dangerous we were close enough to land to make a run for it without getting caught in a major storm. Next a report came over our captain's radio that the storm we were watching darken the sky had been upgraded to a Noreaster that severe winds from various directions were going to make it a mess for driving and all boats should come in as wave heights were expected to hit 5 to 6 feet. As I heard this I had my camera around my neck the whole time and looked to the south and could not believe what I saw as it appeared two tornados were coming together and getting ready to crash into each other. I immediately began photographing this storm as it began to hit unbelievable wind speeds and the captain turned the boat around and raced into shore to tie the boat to the cleets on the dock as soon as possible. This photograph shows the two wind patterns coming from two different directions getting ready to hit and when they did the rain came down the calm of the bay was turned into a raging white water and a third funnel of wind joined these two as we reached the docks. It was lucky for us that we had our radio on and did not attempt to venture out into the Long Island Sound as everyone came flying into port to tie up for the day.
