Recently I chartered a fishing boat for four of my friends and myself. We were heading out on a Friday for some Blackfishiing. The night before the captain called and said tell everyone to be down on the boat at 5:30 am, as he knew of a great spot and he wanted to get there early as we were going 5 miles off shore, from the south shore of Long Island. The next day at 5:30 am everyone was on the boat and we started out of the marina and through the canals towards the Atlantic Ocean. I could not get over how dark the sky was and I don't recall ever seeing the sky so dark while leaving for a fishing trip. The weather had been bad the night before so I was hoping we were not going to get rain. I then went into the cabin and got my camera and video camera set up as usual to capture all of the events of the day, including getting some great sunrises and sunsets. At around 5:45 am the first mate told me to look to the east as the sun's rays were breaching the horizon. It was a great looking site as the sun had not come up yet but its rays were so powerful they were already leaving a reflection in the ocean. In addition, withing minutes the orange and red colored sun's rays began to merge into the dark gray and white night time clouds forming a great color contrast in the sky. Along with all of the colors in the sky in the far background you could see light poles still lit up on the coast of the south shore. Great early morning scenic view and a great fishing day as we brought in 80 Blackfish after 10 hours.
