While attending a Classic Car show down on the south shore of Long Island in September 2018, as usual I was looking to walk away with some unique photos, from cars, trucks, muscle cars and hood ornaments. I have always loved coming across a great hood ornament because when you look up their background there are some pretty interesting stories. While I was walking down one particular isle I came across a 1929 Pierce Arrow that was in fairly good shape, but what caught my eye immediately was the stylish hood ornament that served as the cap for the radiator. I had an opportunity to speak to the owner of the car and my first question was if this was a replica hood ornament of the famed archer or the real thing. He looked at me and said I can assure you this is the original hood ornament from 1929. Pierce Arrow was considered one of the three elite cars of this generation catering to hollywood movie stars, tycoons and presidents. They were in competition with Packard and Peerless in what they called the triple "P" war. Pierce Arrow was the first car at the White House when then President William Howard Taft ordered two of them. The archer was designed by Herbert Dawley who took over Pierce Arrow in 1912 when the founder George Pierce passed away and he stayed with the company until 1938. The Archer was designed for the 1928 and 1929 models.
