With several friends of mine we chartered a fishing boat for stripers out of Montauk, located at the tip of Long Island in New York. We scheduled a full night time trip leaving the docks around 8:00 pm at night and arriving back at 4:00 am in the morning. The captain had said the night time bite had been really good so myself along with two of my friends set out on 36 foot fishing charter into the night time waters off of Montauk. We headed for the area that they call the Canyon that I have fished many times before and have always had great success and was looking to repeat my previous trips. In addition, to being surrounded by my friends and perfect weather conditions I had my camera and video camera to capture all of the action as usual. One of the most unexpected surprises came at around 10:00 pm when we hit our area and I heard a loud splash in the water and the captain yell, "Oh my God", I expected that it was a humpback whale coming up for air, but I could have not been any wronger as the noise was the sound of a Russian Submarine coming to the surface. It had cut its engine and came breached the water's surface at a 45 degree angle and then just landed on its bottom and sat there on the surface. We did not stick around to find out anymore but it was something different. At around 10:45 pm the waves began to pick up and the fishing did also as I was the first one to bring a 45 pound striper over the side, next my two friends joined me with catches and since we knew the first mate he joined in and captured a nice 35 pounder. As the waves began to become more intense and we were being rocked all over the water, the captain told us we better make good with what little time we had. I really lucked out as soon as he said that my line took off and I thought I had a blue fish on by the way it was fighting and going down and taking more line. The more I pulled in the more he went out. Also the water from the waves were coming over the sides making the deck impossible to keep your footing. Finally after 45 minutes to an hour I could feel my line starting to come back to me at first I thought I lost whatever I had then I saw it about 10 feet out from the boat as the first mate shined a spotlight on this monster. As I reeled him in I could not believe his size and that he was a striper. We had to cut the trip short at 2:00 am and head back due to seas becoming to rough and a storm moving in. But when we got to the dock I was taken back when they weighed my two stripers one 45 pounds and the one that I battled for an hour, 63 pounds largest striper to this day I have ever caught. I asked my friend to stand and hold the fish up so I could get some nice photos. Then the Captain took some photos with his camera and mine of all 3 of us and our catches for the night. In total 5 stripers and 2 blues between 4 fisherman and not one striper below 35 pounds. Even though the trip was cut short by 2 hours still an amazing night.
