On a trip to the Cross Bay Marina located off of the Cross Island Expressway which runs alongside the Long Island Sound and out into the Atlantic Ocean, I decided several weeks ago as NY was experiencing one of the coldest winters to go to the north shore of Long Island and see how this deep freeze had effected the waters of the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The week before I had gone down to the south shore of Long Island and could not believe how the canals leading out to the Atlantic Ocean were frozen over and no boats were moving in any direction. When I got to the Cross Bay Marina I pretty much saw the same thing the Long Island Sound was completely frozen over and except for some very shallow areas you could walk on the LI Sound. When I was walking around I noticed these two swans staying under the pier. The sun was starting to come out and was reflecting nicely on the snow and ice. I thought I could get a nice shot of these two swans together but every time I went to take my photo the swan in the background would dive into the water. He was acting like he was camera shy, hence the title for my photo. I tried for 20 minutes but if he came up the other would move in his way and the next thing he was under. I figured he was looking to grab some food out of the water. But the photo to me seemed amusing.

Beautiful image, John. The soft whiteness of the swans, set against the cool white of the floating ice, invites me to stop and be silent, so that these beautiful birds can swim in peace.

Fun image! The one with its head in the water looks like floating ice. Love the light and shadows! l/f
